William Chittick

William Chittick est né le 29 juin 1943 à Milford (Connecticut) aux États-Unis. Il a d'abord étudié au College de Wooster dans l'Ohio, puis a obtenu un doctorat en littérature persane à l'Université de Téhéran sous la direction de Seyyed Hossein Nasr en 1974. Il fut assistant au Centre d’Études de la Science islamique de Téhéran puis a enseigné à l’Académie Impériale iranienne de Philosophie de Téhéran et, enfin, la religion comparée à l'Université technique Aryamehr de Téhéran et a quitté l'Iran avant la révolution. C’est aujourd’hui un universitaire enseignant dans le Department of Asian and Asian-American Studies de la Stony Brook University.

Islamologue, il est considéré comme un des grands spécialistes mondiaux aussi bien de Rûmî que d’Ibn ‘Arabî et, plus généralement, du shiisme, du soufisme et de la cosmologie islamique. Son œuvre est incontournable pour quiconque étudie la doctrine soufie tout particulièrement akbarienne.

Il a été éditeur assistant de l’Encyclopaedia Iranica de la Columbia University (1981-1984). Il a également enseigné la Littérature arabe à la Harvard University et fut Directeur d’études à l’École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales de Paris. Il a enfin fait partie de l’équipe directoriale de la SUNY Press.

Il a été reconnu par plusieurs grands spécialistes internationaux comme, pour la France, Michel Chodkiewicz, Denis Gril ou Claude Addas.

On lui doit également plusieurs traductions et une trentaine d’essais, la plupart traduits dans plusieurs pays, ainsi que de nombreux articles publiés pour une partie dans des revues savantes spécialisées dans l’étude islamique.
